Health Promotion and Wellness Resources

The Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy is committed to helping the profession of physical therapy promote health and wellness for individuals living with a neurologic condition or injury.

Existing Resources:

There are several external resources freely available. Here are links to some of the most helpful resources per our review for physical therapy, with brief descriptions of what is available.

  • The Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy, through its Synapse Learning Center, has a 2-hour course developed by the HPW Taskforce and consultants. This course provides the foundational knowledge and the tools physical therapists and physical therapist assistants need to help clients with neurologic conditions maximize rehabilitation outcomes and thrive in their daily lives.
  • The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force provides evidence-based recommendations about clinical prevention services.
  • The National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD) includes information for healthcare providers, fitness professionals, and people with disabilities on accessible fitness options.
  • Other resources to address smoking cessation and sleep health include (but are not limited to): https://smokefree.govprovides strategies to help people quit smoking and https://nationalsleepfoundation.orgprovides information on how sleep impacts health and wellness, information on various sleep disorders and treatment options.
  • Most conditions treated by physical therapists have a non-profit patient advocacy organization that provides tailored resources for their stakeholders.

Ongoing Efforts:

The following activities were initiated by the HPW Task Force (2016-2019) and are being addressed by the current HPW Committee (2020-2023). The HPW Committee is undergoing strategic planning and development. Please reach out to the Committee if there are other areas of need and priority that you think should be addressed.

1) Facilitating the development of disease-specific documents by the ANPT Special Interest Groups.

  • Bridging the Gap in SCI Care
    • Created by the SCI Special Interest Group to Bridge the Gap between rehabilitation and lifelong physical activity & fitness
  • Sargent Health Fitness Plan (NEW)
    • Created by Boston University College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences to enhance communication and success with transition from rehabilitation to fitness in a community center
  • Other documents coming soon.
 2) Collaboration with the APTA Council on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Wellness within the three specific target areas of outreach and development, best practice and education to leverage collective resources across populations.
