Neurology Section Endowment Fund
The Neurology Section continues to lead the profession in supporting doctoral training for neurologic physical therapists. The Section has financially supported doctoral training awards in the past and at the same time has honored two extraordinary Section members, Mary Lou Barnes and Patricia Leahy.
The Mary Lou Barnes Adopt-A-Doc award was originated in 1993 after Dr. Barnes suggested during her Mary McMillan lecture that doctoral training needed to be supported by members. The Patricia Leahy award was begun in 1995 to further support doctoral education. Beginning 2001,the Section has partnered with the Foundation for Physical Therapy to administer our scholarships within the Foundation DOCS program.
A fund to endow the two scholarships was developed by the Section through the Foundation for Physical Therapy. We have achieved our goal of fully endowing the fund. Future awards will be self-sustaining, no longer requiring the Section budget to reflect the expenses. The Foundation is the perfect mechanism to set up our endowment because it is a professional organization with experts in managing large funds. Members are encouraged to continue to pledge to the endowment and to route regular Foundation contributions to the Neurology Section Scholarship Endowment.
