Mission

The mission of the Neurology Section is to serve neurologic physical therapy providers and to advance evidence-based practice, education, and research in neurologic physical therapy.

Through dynamic and innovative leadership, our members are empowered to promote optimal recovery, wellness, and quality of life in individuals with movement dysfunction due to neurologic disease or injury.

Vision

The vision of the Neurology Section is to be a leading partner in the national and international rehabilitation communities by facilitating collaborative relationships, promoting knowledge translation, and influencing policy.

Action Plan

Goal 1

Advance neurologic physical therapy practice at all levels of clinical mastery within an evidence-based context.

Objectives

1.1. Define effective neurologic practice for physical therapy providers.

1.2. Develop educational resources for PT and PTA students/novice and advanced PT practitioners to enhance and augment their level of practice.

1.3. Increase the number of neurologic clinical specialists (NCS) by 20% and neurologic physical therapy credentialed clinical residencies to 10 within the next 3 yrs.

1.4. Identify educational resources for faculty/advanced clinicians to further enhance their level of practice.

1.5. Promote autonomous practice in neurologic physical therapy by defining a model of autonomous neurologic physical therapy practice.

Goal 2

Solicit, create, and deliver innovative educational offerings to advance the practice of neurologic physical therapy through accessible programs.

Objectives

2.1. Increase and broaden the number of individuals (PT, PTA, and students) who participate in educational experiences offered by the Neurology Section by 10% in 2006 and 20% in 2007.

2.2. Ensure CSM programming content is congruent with the needs and interests of constituents who attend these conferences.

2.3. Enhance consistency of neurologic physical therapy education within professional PT programs with a focus on knowledge translation in the clinic.

2.4. Disseminate and integrate IIISTEP content into neurologic physical therapy education and clinical practice.

2.5. Develop a process to provide educational materials about neurologic physical therapy to other healthcare providers and consumers of neurologic physical therapy services.

Goal 3

Advance and disseminate the body of scientific evidence in neurology by facilitating and supporting innovative collaborative research.

Objectives

3.1. Provide ongoing support for scholarships in neurologic physical therapy.

3.2. Continue support of research within the Neurology Section membership and external research community.

3.3. Disseminate research to members of Neurology Section and other APTA sections.

Goal 4

Develop innovative and effective leaders in the Neurology Section across the professional continuum.

Objectives

4.1. Identify and determine priority needs for leadership development in the Neurology Section.

4.2. Develop a mentorship program for the Neurology Section Special Interest Groups.

4.3. Implement a formal orientation for new officers and appointed positions by PT ‘07.

Goal 5

Establish and expand a collaborative network of internal and external partnerships that enhance the mission and vision of the Neurology Section.

Objectives

5.1. Increase membership in the Neurology Section 30%.

5.2. Identify potential Neurology Section partners that are internal (section/SIGs, students, APTA components) and external (non-APTA members, organizations, consumers, industry, etc.) to our organization.

5.3. Increase opportunities for volunteerism within the Neurology Section membership.

Goal 6

Advocate for and participate in policy decisions that enhance the rehabilitation, health, and quality of life needs of patients/clients and facilitate reimbursement commensurate with those services provided by neurologic physical therapy.

Objectives

6.1. Establish or maintain representation from our section to APTA’s Government Affairs committee, Reimbursement Department, and the Healthcare Policy and Administration (HPA) section.

6.2. Identify policy flaws affecting the quality of neurologic physical therapy practice.

6.3. Identify and prepare membership for participation in policy decision making.
